In the early days of home computing things were fun and experimental. Lots of people wrote silly little applets which would do surprising things, ranging from shooting 'Desktop ducks' to 'flying sausages'.
I wrote a number of desktop sillies myself, although I should point out that in the early days of home computing many school teachers used to refer to desktop sillies as 'viruses', simply because it was a generic word that referred to "irritating little games which were a distraction to lessons". However, none of these desktop sillies actually does anything harmfull to your computer and is not a 'virus' in todays' definition of the word. A bit like hackers are no longer real hackers!
