The first Cambridge formation
Over the next few pages, I hope to give you some brief information regarding the current crop circle season, which seems to have got off to a late start this year, but as I write this, two incredibly impressive formations have just been discovered.
The diagrams and comments shown here are just a small sample of on-going research and are based on initial surveys of the relevant formations. These are subject to update when new evidence is discovered.
I hope to have more information in the next issue of Enigma, together with the results of my research experiments. I believe this year will yield more valuable research than previous years, simply because "things seem to be coming together now" and a lot of loosely connected theories are beginning to link together.
The first reported crop formation of the year was just off the M11 near Cambridge, reported by Diahann Krishna. What follows now is her report accompanied by her initial diagram.
Ever since I was old enough to reach into the refrigerator and gaze at the bowls of gelatin that were often chilling on the shelf... I can remember resisting the temptation to plant a single fingerprint mark right in the centre of the perfectly smooth surface. Now as I look at the bright yellow and green, rolling fields of England that stretch across the countryside in the springtime I get the same feeling that the canvas is awaiting a cosmic finger to swoop down and make it's mark on the flawless surface below. Oddly enough, the first formation of the year (in the UK) and its counterpart have the striking resemblance of none other than a rather large fingerprint! (see diagrams below)
The 1996 crop circle season had gotten off to a rather late start due to the dry Spring weather, so it wasn't until mid-May that the first reported formation occurred in a field of blooming oilseed rape. Along the road of the M11 (south of the A14 intersection) a circular disturbance is still faintly visible in the field alongside the bustling motorway. I had driven past the location for days peering at several questionable spots and even went so far as to investigate them one evening after work shortly before sunset. I only found what turned out to be two large "bald spots" at the time. A couple of days later word had gotten around that there was a crop formation in that very same field. I hurriedly went back out that evening and found the real thing less than 200' away from where I'd been the previous time!
The pattern is approximately 150'(length including the tail) by 110'(width) and is a bulging, flowing mass of neatly laid 4' stalks of brittle rape. On the first day, it had very few visitors so the stalks were neatly bent at 90 degrees and the edges clearly defined. Looking at the diagram below, the swirl starts from the centre isle and moves out in a counterclockwise movement all the way to the tail, which ends in a circular flow in a clockwise direction.
I had been eager to see a formation in rape because of the fact that the stalks are thick and brittle making a hoax difficult, if not impossible. I even tested a patch of standing rape at the edge of the tramline near the entry to the field to see what sort of effort would be involved in hoaxing in this crop. Not only did the stems not co-operate by bending at the base of the stalk as they were in the formation, but the weight of the plants were so great that I couldn't succeed in keeping them down. The stalks behind were like a barrier that kept the bunch I was working on from touching the ground below. But most obviously, it had a simple elegance and curviness that radiated feminine energy. From the aerial view, it almost looks like a foetus in a womb with a tail coming off the end. Whatever the symbol is trying to express, the curves and circular swirls are indicative of female energy.

Unfortunately, I was unable to visit the Cambridge formation, so the first formation I visited this year was one which appeared on Saturday 1st June in a field of Barley opposite Silbury Hill in Wiltshire.
I eagerly drove down to the location and hurriedly carried my equipment into the field. Unfortunately when I got to the formation I found it in a pretty poor state. Most of the stalks had muddy footprints on them and it looked 'rushed'. My initial feeling was that it was hoaxed.
This was confirmed by the fact that I got no anomalous readings on my various equipment. Since last year, I have some even more sensitive equipment, which is a very good indication of 'genuineness'. Unfortunately there was not even a blip.
However, the confirming evidence came when two other people in the formation exclaimed that they had found post holes. I went over to see what they were looking at and yes indeed there was a neat hole at each of the petal intersections, indicating the centre of each of the circles. As we arrived at the formation as early as we could on the Saturday, we were probably amongst the first visitors. All the evidence pointed to a hoax - and not a very good one at that!
Another formation we visited was one up near Basingstoke in Hampshire. This one was in Oil Seed Rape and was discovered on 2nd June. We saw it in the field, but the crop was so ripe and tangled, we couldn't see a way of getting to the formation without fighting our way through the crop.
This was regarded as a good sign, as it meant hoaxers would have had the same problem and would likely have left some kind of damaged track leading to the formation. No such damage was discovered. However, this formation "didn't feel right", so we decided not to investigate further.
Another formation was then discovered in the same field as the petal shape, opposite Silbury Hill, but after studying reports from other researchers, it was discovered that this was just a very poor 'spiral type shape', probably formed by someone running round in the field.
However, for me, the season got off to a magnificent start, when on the morning of Monday 17th June an enormous pictogram was discovered in East Field, Alton Barnes - home of the famous 1990 pictogram, and numerous others over the years.
According to reports it was over 500 foot in length and seemingly represented a DNA like double-helix shape. I had to view this for myself and drove straight there after work. I got there at about 8.00pm and unloaded my equipment from the car.
From the road (leading down from Knap Hill, towards Alton Barnes) you couldn't really see the shape of the formation, although you could see that it was pretty elaborate.
Arriving at the formation itself, I was initially impressed with the clockwise lay of the barley. It seemed to have well-defined edges and was not damaged too much - but then I was on the scene as quickly as possible.
The main formation consisted of twelve circles in a north/south line. The two end ones slightly larger than the rest, approximately 56 feet in diameter. However, the most impressive part was a double-helix sequence of much smaller circles criss-crossing the twelve main circles.
These smaller circles, ranged in size from only three or four feet up to around eight feet (as I write this, I intend to return to the formation to carry out a detailed survey) and intersected every other 'large' circle. (see diagram on next page)
My initial thoughts were "How on earth would anyone hoax this in the dark of night?" It was so accurate, geometrically aligned and well spaced. In fact, I was to remain at the site until well after darkness, so I saw for myself how difficult it was to see anything. In the dark (even after my eyes adjusted) I couldn't see many of the smaller circles.
However, the most interesting events were yet to be witnessed. On powering up my various items of equipment, I found that very erratic electro-static readings were being detected. There was almost some kind of 'charge' in the atmosphere. Although I did detect this for around 100 or so feet around the formation, it seemed to be centred on the circles themselves.
I also monitored various radio frequencies with the aid of a hand-held radio scanner (AOR AR8000 for the technical reader). There was nothing extra-ordinary detected until I decided to go right up the top end of the frequency range. At 1500.0000 MHz (yes, it is that exact) I detected a very strange 'warbling' type noise.
The weirdest thing about this was that I turned the squelch control (which filters out background noise and hiss) up fully and the sound was still there. I couldn't filter it out because the signal strength was so strong.
I manually off-tuned the receiver and the signal immediately disappeared, even on a very narrow band-width setting. The signal was very strong and only on 1500.0000 MHz.
The amazing thing was that this signal seemed to be originating from the formation itself. Again, it was slightly detectable outside the formation, but the signal started to drop off rapidly as I walked away from the formation.
Due to having higher specification monitoring equipment this year, it was the first time I had got some kind of indication of the actual frequency being picked up inside crop circles.
As this issue goes to press, there have been approximately twelve formations discovered so far this year. These are:
1. Sollum, Lancashire
2. Silbury Hill, Wiltshire (Petal hoax)
3. Silbury Hill, Wiltshire (spiral)
4. Girton, near Cambridge
5. Near Basingstoke, Hampshire (crescent with a ring around it)
6. Near Basingstoke, Hampshire (crescent back to back)
(both these formations are located at approx. OS SU590505)
7. Linton, Near Oxford
8. Goodworth Clatford, nr Andover (circle with 2 rings approx 80')
9. East Field, Alton Barnes (DNA?)
10. A second formation near Girton in Cambridgeshire. (see report, below)
11. Huntingdon, nr Cambridge (no details yet)
I will get as many details as possible on these formations, and any other that may appear, and do a full report in the next issue.

It's common knowledge that formations occur in the same fields or locations year after year, although sometimes at once. This particular spot of Cambridge was no exception.
I'd been watching the fields closely for several weeks after the first one had appeared and on June 18th while driving home from work I turned my head suddenly to the left and spotted a massive circle cut precisely in a field of young barley directly opposite the first formation! Upon first walking into it I was struck not only by it's majestic form that contrasted starkly with the wispy field of barley, but it was the lay of the formation that immediately struck me.
I have never seen rippled waves of grain like that, which was caused by 45 degree bending of the stalks 2/3 of the way up from the base. So the bottom of the plant had been pressed down (not bent) in a similar fashion to the oilseed rape across the way and there were exploding nodes which bent anywhere from 55cm-70cm up from the base.
The tips of the barley were actually reaching towards the sky! Groups of stalks had been carefully pressed to the earth in various directions on top of other groups. It seemed more like groups of stalks were pressed in particular directions, but there wasn't an uniform swirling like in the first formation. In one spot there were five layers neatly interwoven going in different directions. In addition, the sharp terminating points gave the formation a more masculine feel, even though it is of the same basic design as it's counterpart across the M11.
Other anomalies: in addition, the formation had only been there for a couple of days, yet there was a static crackling noise still audible in the air within it. Also, I received a first hand report that there was a bright ball of light in that field around 3am Saturday night (15th).
The formation was dowsed by Michael Newark who drew a diagram of the ley patterns he'd discovered.Not surprisingly there were intersecting yang (masculine) lines that crossed in the centre of the formation, besides 42 radial lines, 30 concentric and 117 radial lines that entered along the perimeter of the formation.
He described this ley pattern as identical to that found in churches (high altars of ancient cathedrals) and all of the sacred sites throughout England and the world.Clearly these are markers for these sacred spots around the planet, which is why people are inexplicably drawn to them year after year. If these indentations are being left behind in organic materials around the world to point out sacred spots on our planet long forgotten, my question is Who's finger is responsible?
