Enigma Issue 1: Premonitions
A view of the future....or coincidence? | Summer 1993
To be able to see into the future must be a daunting thought for many people, perhaps even disturbing, especially if the events foreseen are not happy ones. Sometimes people may experience a fleeting, uneasy feeling of portending danger for no apparent reason, or a dream in which an event takes place which is later found to have actually happened. Many people are familiar with premonitions such as these and often they are forgotten or cast aside as mere coincidence, but are they?
The following accounts, all experienced by the same person, were recalled to me recently. They are reproduced here for you to ponder over....
- One evening before I was married, my boyfriend wanted me to go for a ride on his motor bike. I had a very strong feeling that we must not go out that evening, that something bad would happen. Much to his annoyance (as it was a fine summer's evening) I had my own way and we stayed indoors. Who knows what fate had saved us from?
- My aunt was ill with cancer and one night I awoke suddenly knowing that she was dead. There was something in the cool night air coming from the window that filled me with certainty. I looked at the bedside clock and it said 2am. When I telephoned my cousin later to enquire about my aunt I was told that she had died at 2am.
- My boss gave me a lift in his car to the funeral of an elderly relative. A week later I dreamt that he (my boss) had died and I went to his funeral. When I went to work I was informed that he had died suddenly the day before, so within a few days the dream came true and I did attend his funeral.
- One lovely spring day I felt uneasy. I could not understand it as I had no problems, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. Yet, I could not shake off my feeling of uneasiness and depression. Later that evening I received a telephone call to inform me that a friend had been killed in a road accident.
- A friend was expecting a baby and was six months pregnant. One day the thought came to me that she would have a child with Down's Syndrome. I cast it aside feeling ashamed for thinking of such a thing.
When the child was born, her husband telephoned to tell my husband and I that his wife had given birth to a baby with Down's Syndrome. I felt shocked and dismayed to hear the news and felt that in some way I was responsible for having had the premonition three months previously. This of course was not the case, as the genetical defect would have occurred at conception.
What is it that plants the thought of a future event in a person's mind? Such a prophesy suggests that everything in life is predetermined and following a set pattern that cannot be changed. It is a mystery that has yet to be solved.
